Open positions in the ICOS field

Postdoctoral researcher, resilience of forests to air pollution and climate extremes, ETH Zurich, Switzerland

The Grassland Sciences group at the Department of Environmental Systems Science, is looking for a reliable, enthusiastic, and highly motivated postdoc with a passion for science to join their team in Zurich. The research focuses on process- and system-understanding of the biosphere-atmosphere greenhouse gas exchange of forests and agroecosystems, in particular on their response to management and climate.

This position is embedded in a project on the Impacts of Air Pollution and Climate Extremes on the Resilience of European Forests (CERES), a collaboration with Prof. Mana Gharun at the University of Münster. It aims to improve the mechanistic understanding of how changes in tree ecophysiology in response to air pollution and climate extremes drive the forest ecosystem's CO2 and H2O fluxes and thus its capacity to sequester carbon and its evaporative cooling. The project will combine long-term deposition simulations, local meteorological measurements, existing tree level growth and water use measurements with whole ecosystem flux measurements to identify ecophysiological resistance and recovery responses to climate extremes under different air pollution along a climatic gradient in Europe. Moreover, we will use statistical (e.g., random forest, generalised additive models) and process-based (e.g., SPA) models to project future forest responses to global change drivers.

Applications are open. Candidate interviews are expected to be held in mid-June 2024. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.

The successful candidate is expected to start the role by 1st October 2024 (or upon agreement). Read more and apply here: https://jobs.ethz.ch/job/view/JOPG_ethz_TH9BBJOiwDr8L8j9G7

Research Engineer, Micrometeorology and environmental field measurements, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Sweden

The Unit for Field-based Forest Research at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU)/Faculty of Forest Sciences, is hiring a qualified research engineer in the area of micrometeorology and environmental field measurements.

The successful candidate will join a team of in total 15 research engineers and technicians at the research station Svartberget. Svartberget is contributing to three Swedish national research infrastructures; ICOS Sweden, part of the European research infrastructure ICOS RI focusing on monitoring and understanding the greenhouse gas balance; ACTRIS Sweden (Aerosol, Clouds and Trace Gases Research Infrastructure) as part of the European research infrastructure ACTRIS, as well as SITES (Swedish Infrastructure for Ecosystem Science). The research infrastructures include extensive automated and manual measuring programs aiming to understand the ecology, biogeochemistry, land-atmosphere exchange and management of boreal ecosystems.

The main tasks for this open position include the maintenance and further development of the ICOS field research infrastructures and the ongoing measuring programs at two ground-based Ecosystem stations (Degerö and Svartberget) and one Atmosphere station (Svartberget) with a 150 m tall mast. Daily duties include field work in relation to maintenance of sensors, data loggers and multiplexers, troubleshooting and calibration, as well as office work related to programming and handling of data.

Deadline for applications is 28th April 2024. Read more and apply here: https://www.slu.se/en/about-slu/work-at-slu/jobs-vacancies/?rmpage=job&rmjob=10158&rmlang=UK

MSCA post-doc fellowship at ENERGY-Lab - Expression of interest, unlocking the green hydrogen potential for the South-West Indian Ocean Region, University of La Reunion

A research lab at the University of La Reunion is developing a R&I programme entitled LIGHTEN-IO in the frame of the European regional development fund of La Reunion and Indian Ocean. One of their objectives is to unlock the green hydrogen potential for the South-West Indian Ocean Region, in line with our regional energy plan which aims to boost the implementation of renewable energy hydrogen projects in La Reunion.

Within this framework, they are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to apply with them to the Horizon Europe ERA-Fellowship 2024 call. This call aims to attract the best postdoctoral fellows to legal entities based in Widening countries, like La Reunion. It is based on the MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships call. The postdoc fellow will work with them on a regionalized approach to estimate the potential of development of RE hydrogen tailored to the Southwest Indian Ocean region peculiarities (climate, topography, land use and occupation, etc.) and constraints (environmental constraints, access to infrastructure, and local regulations).

Postdoctoral researcher, Improvement of surface-atmosphere flux estimation, ULiège, Belgium

The TERRA Teaching and Research Center of the University of Liège invites applications for a 1.5 to 3-year fully funded postdoctoral fellowship for the investigation on surface-atmosphere flux estimation improvement on eddy-covariance flux-tower stations.

The research will be conducted in the framework of the AGROFLUX project (“Improving the agrosystem GHG budget through data-assimilation of surface fluxes”) funded by the Belgian Science Policy as part of the BRAIN2.0 program. This program supports the implementation of Belgian research action through interdisciplinary networks, and is dedicated to Challenges and knowledge of the living and non-living world. AGROFLUX is a partnership between ULiège, micro-meteorologists from the Royal Belgian Meteorological Institute and fluid dynamicists from the Catholic University of Louvain-La-Neuve and Catholic University of
Leuven.
